1. University of Cape Town
About 5,000 academic and professional, administrative support and service staff and about 29,000 students from over a hundred different countries make up the multicultural, multinational community that is the University of Cape Town (UCT). Originally founded in Kimberley in 1896 as the South African School of Mines, “Wits” refers today to the University of the Witwatersrand. The school relocated to Johannesburg in 1904, and by 1922, it had grown into a full-fledged university. After its founding on the principle of nondiscrimination on the basis of race, the university found itself at odds with the apartheid regime, which led to police raids and the imprisonment of both staff and students. The institution had to close due to the fighting inside.
Perhaps the most famous former student is Nelson Mandela, who earned a law degree from the school before going on to serve as president of South Africa and win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Nadine Gordimer, winner of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature, was also a student at Wits for a year. In addition, Nobel laureates in chemistry (1982’s Aaron Klug) and medicine (2002’s Sydney Brenner) both attended Wits for their undergraduate studies.
3. Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University (SU), based in South Africa, has branches in many different nations.
